Why we blog

Welcome to "on mada na walesi" or in the local lingo, turn the radio on, a blog dedicated to justice and the restoration of democracy in Fiji.

In days before the Public Emergency Regulations (PER) 2009 and the Public Order Amendment Decree (POAD) 2012, the radio and media could be trusted to give the people of Fiji honest and truthful stories rather than the lies an misinformation trotted out these days by our docile and compliant media, a far cry from the fearless journalists of yesteryears.

But we know they are still there, those honorable journalists, their instincts for the truth and the welfare of the people blunted and muted by 6 years of military rule and martial law under the PER and POAD.

So until freedom is restored to Fiji, this blog joins Intelligentsiya, Coup 4.5 and the other freedom blogs in trying to bring the truth to the people of Fiji, that is not being printed in the Fiji Times or broadcast on Fiji TV or Legend FM.

We started this blog on 10th July 2012, in disgust at the continuing imposition of draconian decrees like the Television Decree and the Electronic Voter Registration Decree - published on the eve of public consultations for a new constitution. As we write, the public consultations still have NOT started.

We are tired of the lies, tired of the arbitrary, draconian and dictatorial behaviour and decrees of this unlawful regime that has taken over the government that belongs to the PEOPLE of Fiji, enabled by a sycophantic military.

Six years have passed since the unlawful and unconstitutional coup of 5 December 2006. The people are promised free and inclusive constitutional consultations to start on 3 July 2012 - its now 10th July and no sign of Yash Ghai, Satendra Nandan, Taufa Vakatale, Penelope Moore and Christina Murray's 'independent commission' that was to start talking with the people of Fiji and drafting a new constitution.

Yet, on the verge of this promised process, two draconian decrees are imposed on the people of Fiji, without consultation and without their approval.

So we forge on, waiting for the regime to yet again renege on its promises.

In the meantime, enough of press self-censorship that does not give us TRUTH but only lies and misinformation, so, ON MADA NA WALESI!!
